Find out everything you need to know about Florida sports betting. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports Florida sports betting has technically been legal since May 2021 and the Hard Rock Sportsbook app recently became the first mobile sports betting option in the Sunshine State.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida are behind the launch of the app after they were effectively granted a monopoly on FL sports betting following the agreement of a 30-year compact with the state in May.
Legal challenges to the compact are ongoing so it’s unlikely we’ll see any further sportsbooks launching in Florida soon. In the meantime Floridians can also play on sports for real money via our recommended Fantasy Sites.

Sports Betting in Florida
Sports betting was effectively legalized in Florida in May 2021, when the Florida House of Representatives signed a gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe that would see them introduce mobile sports betting to the Sunshine state.
This happened on November 1st, when the Seminole Tribe launched sports betting in Florida via the Hard Rock mobile app amid controversy surrounding their deal with the Floridian government.
Hard Rock is currently the only sportsbook operating in the state, with this being the case since the start of November. However, with this launch being controversial to say the least, it remains to be seen as to when other sports betting sites will launch in FL.

Is sports betting legal in Florida?
Sports betting has been legal in Florida for a number of months now, with mobile sports wagering finally launching in the Sunshine state on November 1st via the Hard Rock sportsbook mobile app.
This launch has ended up causing quite a stir however, with several lawsuits being filed against the Seminole Tribe, who were responsible for this November 1st launch.
How many sportsbooks will be available in Florida?
At this point in time, Hard Rock sportsbook is the only way to legally wager on sports in FL, with only their mobile app being live at this time.
Given the potential that Florida has in terms of the sports betting market, we highly doubt Hard Rock will be the only sportsbook live in the state once their lawsuit issues have been dealt with.
Nearby States with Online Sports Betting
With just one sportsbook currently live in Florida, and with this launch being a controversial one at that, it’s understandable if those in the Sunshine are wanting to wait before wagering their money on sports.
Unfortunately, FL has no neighboring states that have sports betting live at this time, with sports betting currently being illegal in both Alabama and Georgia.
Potential Florida online sports betting sites
With Hard Rock Sportsbook already live in the Sunshine state, a number of other sports betting sites look set to join them in the near future, especially given the potential FL has as a sports betting state.
Given this, we’re here to go over some of the sportsbooks that look most likely to launch in Florida once the opportunity presents itself.
DraftKings are already live in a vast number of states, with DK being one of the US’ leading sportsbooks at this moment in time because of this.
Their Daily Fantasy Sports site is already live in the Sunshine state, thus DraftKings shouldn’t have any issues launching in FL when the time comes.
FanDuel, much like DraftKings, are already live in Florida via their DFS site, and given how many states they’re live in already, FD are one of the leading sites when it comes to those that are looking to launch in FL.
Caesars are effectively a household name at this point given how popular their casino site is, and given their recent acquisition of William Hill’s sportsbook, they now boast one of the best online sports betting sites as well.
Given their size and stature, Caesars definitely look like they have all that it’ll take to launch in FL when the time comes.
Are Florida Retail Sportbooks operational?
Retail sportsbooks are not currently operating in Florida, with the deal signed back in May 2021 with the Seminole Tribe being for mobile sports wagering only.
With mobile sports betting only just going live as of November 1st, and with this causing quite the uproar, it remains to be seen as to when retail sports betting will rear its head in FL.
Latest Florida Sports Betting News
Federal officials have come out and defended the deal between Florida governors and the Seminole Tribe amid a number of lawsuits being filed against both parties.
The US Department of Interior have denied claims that the deal between FL and the Seminole Tribe violates federal law, with a 33-page court document being presented on Tuesday disputing claims that the sports-betting plan violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
US District Judge Dabney Friedrich held a hearing last week in a lawsuit filed by two pari-mutuel facilities that opposes the sports betting plan, with the outcome of this hearing yet to be known.
Florida Sports Betting History
Florida originally tried to legalize sports betting in March 2020, with lawmakers sitting down to negotiate with the Seminole Tribe just 10 days before the end of the legislative session.
Because of this, a sports betting bill, and agreement with the tribe, failed to materialize, with Florida leaving it to 2021 for their next attempt to legalize sports betting.
April 2021 saw a major breakthrough following the failure of SB392 in January 2021, as FL Governor Ron DeSantis signed a deal with the Seminole Tribe, with the Florida House approving of this deal in May 2021.
The first opposition to this deal came about in June 2021, as Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber issued a letter to the Department of the Interior urging them to reject the deal with the Seminole Tribe.
The District of Columbia followed suit in September, filing a lawsuit in the federal court, with this seeing the proposed launch date of sports betting, October 15th, pushed back.
November 1st then finally saw the launch of sports betting in FL as Hard Rock sent their mobile sports betting app live despite facing a number of legal challenges that are yet to be resolved.
