MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State cross country will send teams to two different meets this weekend. Seven members of the men’s team will compete at the Florida State Invitational, which is also serving as the Pre-Nationals, on Friday in Tallahassee, Fla., while the rest of the two squads will travel to Indiana for Saturday’s University of Evansville Invitational.
Eagle head coach Clay Dixon and sophomores Justin Chavez, Michael Dunagan, Kyle Embry and Jarrett Forrest; along with freshmen Justin Bland, Toby Cook, Peyton Fairchild, and Kyler Stewart are in Florida.
Morehead State’s contingent will compete against 21 other collegiate programs, along with a handful of individual entries, in the Open 8K event that begins at 9:10 a.m. at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. The talented field includes schools from across the nation, including two from the Pac-12 (Arizona and California), two from the Big XII (Kansas and Kansas State), as well as South Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International.
All seven of the Eagle men who are in Florida recorded ‘pr’s at last Saturday’s Live in Louisville Classic and all ran sub 28-minute times.
“I want us to take a few more steps forward from what we did in Louisville. I think we still have quite a bit to show. Several of our guys got ‘pr’s (there), but some still have a lot more in them,” Dixon said. “I’m looking to keep progressing and compete against really good competition, and show (them) what they can do against these really big schools. Those are my two goals for the guys in Tallahassee.”
Two years ago, Morehead State’s women won the Evansville Invitational, while the men took second. Most of this year’s entries will be new to the meet, although sophomore Mary Alice Thornburg was the top finisher from 2019 who will compete on Saturday. Thornburg was 20th in 20:04.2 in that race. All of the Eagle men will be participating in their first Evansville Invitational meet. Ten men and nine women are expected to toe the line for Morehead State.
Saturday’s race will take place at the Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville, with the men beginning at 11 a.m. ET and the women at 11:45 a.m. ET. The men’s race will be an 8K, while the ladies will run 6K. Six teams are slated to participate.
For those competing in the Hoosier State, freshman Lucy Singleton (53rd in 19:18.8) and freshman Austin Montgomery (302nd in 27:52.6) were the top performers in their respective races last Saturday in Louisville.
“(The women) are aiming to be a top-three team (at Evansville). For a lot of the girls, this will be their very first 6K. That’s the distance for the regional meet in November, which will be the next time they’ll run a 6K,” Dixon said. “For the men, we want to see continued improvement, especially with the younger guys.”
